Save file location
On Windows the saves are in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Hangar 13 Games\Mafia The Old Country\SaveGames\<user-id>\ as .sav files. There is one autosave, not a stack of manual slots.

What I checked
I took the path from PCGamingWiki and I am not shortening the folder name. The user-id segment is a number Steam assigns. Do not replace it with your Windows username and expect a hit. Config files are under %LOCALAPPDATA%\MafiaTheOldCountry\Saved\Config\Windows\. Steam Cloud covers saves and graphics settings. Chapter replay and Free Ride share that progress. On Steam Deck or Proton the same tree sits inside steamapps/compatdata/1941540/pfx/.
How to back it up
Close the game, copy the SaveGames folder somewhere else, then copy it back if an autosave goes bad. Because there is only one slot, a bad checkpoint is the whole file.
